depend what kind of hair you have? the spikey semetrical stle hair is in at the moment. spikey, and off centre, with loads of gel! almost anything goes today, but dont have that 1960,s shaggy messy look( i cant stand it! ha ha) just makes you look scruffy! and as for gay people, i am a woman and some of the best cuts and styles i have ever had have been styled by someone gay!! i acually prefere a gay man to do it, rather than a woman, as they are more fussy and precise, and always seem to know what looks good and what the latest fashion is!! good luck.
it deffinetly depends on the type of hair u have for example:


asian men look good with their hair about 7-10 centimeters long


if u have somewhat straight hair u can leave it longer (to the shoulders) or cut it short


black men look good with really short hair (like no more than 2 centimeters)
