Take Biotin or another form of hair and nail vitamins and use all natural products on your hair. Form an all natural hair regimen and refrain from using heat on your hair or relaxers (these prevent you from retaining hair growth as they make your hair more susceptible to breakage). Wash your hair weekly and wrap it with a satin scarf at night. I use Mineral Indulgence scalp serum on my customers hair who have alopecia, and massage it on to their scalps...this promotes hair growth and rids their scalps of fungal issues like ringworm. The Herbalaxer (natural relaxer) works well too, as it is 100% organic has no chemicals or additives, and is made up of clays, hebs, essential oils, protein and silica which are VERY healthy for hair and promote hair growth. Not only that but this product did wonders at detangling and loosing the curl pattern in both my and my kids hair. It also strengthened the brittle hair that some of my customers had (I work at a hair salon). The products that worked well for me and promoted hair growth were the: Shea and Cocoa Butter Hair Creme, Olive and Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment, Herbal Remedies Scalp Serum, Herbalaxer, and taking vitamins daily. Mineral oil, SLS, DMDM Hydantoin, preservatives ect do not behoove the state of African American hair, so I advise you to switch over to 100% natural hair products and take better care of your hair this way.
Also, the less manipulation you apply to your hair, the less breakage you may have...hair doesn't like to be fooled with...and excessive uses of things like gels (with alcohol) and hard bristled brushes can cause breakage.
Good Luck!

To Motherofthree: Do you know how to contact mineral indulgence by phone? I filled out this form online but I never got an email confirmation so I dont know if it ever went through or not. I dont feel comfortable purchasing anything without speaking to someone directly.

Are there any ';tried and true'; ways to make hair grow longer for African American women? No. This is simply because everyone's hair has a terminal length that is determined by genetics. This means that everyone cannot grow their hair very long because hair will not grow past a certain point. What that point is is different for everyone. If you notice that no matter how well you take care of your hair that it will not grow past a certain length, then it might be your terminal length. There is no magic formula for it because it is determined by genetics and nothing else.
Genetics definitely play a part in hair growth and texture. To keep your hair healthy, which is an important growth factor, make sure you get your ends trimmed once a month, don't use harsh chemical treatments and deep condition at least once a month.
Massaging makes a lot of difference to the rate at which hair grows, so a regular massage with any oil of your choice is recommended to speed up the process. Try http://solutionsforhairgrowth.blogspot.c for more details.
